The NUBots, from the University of Newcastle Australia, started competing in RoboCup in 2002 in the Standard Platform League (SPL) with the Sony Aibo. Whilst using the Sony Aibo’s the NUBots finished in the top 3 in the world from 2002~2007, and were World Champions in 2006. In 2008 the Standard Platform League starting using the Aldebaran Nao’s and the NUBots were the first World Champions in 2008 in a joint team with the National University of Maynooth in Ireland.
In 2012 the NUBots decided to enter the more challenging Humanoid League – this is considered more challenging because it covers mechanical, electronic and software design as opposed to the Standard Platform League which covers only software design. The Humanoid League is divided into 3 leagues, these are:
- KidSize League (height 40~90cm)
- TeenSize League (height 80~140cm), and
- AdultSize League (height 130cm~180cm).
The NUBots competed in the KidSized League from 2012~2017 and in 2018 moved to the TeenSize League.
